Wilber Frazier was a stellar basketball player at Minden, Louisiana's Webster High School. The 6' 7" power forward / center led the Webster Wolves to back-to-back state championships in 1959-1960 & 1960-1961. Frazier along with teammates Elton Hudson, Bunny Hudson, Donny McCoy & John C. Walker were the starters on the 1961 National Runner-Up Team that played Burt High of Clarksville, TN in the National Interscholastic High School Basketball Tournament in Nashville, TN.
Wilbert had an outstanding career at Grambling State University, leading the Tigers in scoring his senior year with a 29.2 points per game average. Wilbert and Teammate Willis Reed led the Grambling Tigers to two straight SWAC Championships in 1961-1962 & 1962-1963.
The Frazier - Reed combo also led the Tigers to the semi-finals of the 1963 NAIA National Basketball Championship against Pan American College of Edinburg, Texas. The Broncs of Pan American were led by future Phildelphia 76er Lucious Jackson (Morehouse High - Bastrop, LA) who dueled against future New York Knick superstar Willis Reed (Westside High School - Lillie, Louisiana). Playing before a capacity crowd at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, Pan American edged Grambling 90 to 83 to advance to the 1963 NAIA finals.
Wilbert Frazier was the 1st player drafted in the second round (12th overall) of the 1965 NBA draft. After an altercation with future NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, Wilbert opted to join the ABA and played primarily for the Houston Mavericks and the New York Nets. While playing for the Mavericks, Wilbert appeared in EBONY magazine who described him as the only bright spot on the team. In his career in the American Basketball Association, Wilbert scored 1500 points and grabbed 1,087 rebounds.
Wilbert was inducted into the Grambling State University Legends Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
Wilbert passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 in Dallas, Texas. Wilbert lived and worked in DeSoto, Texas during his final years.
Wilbert Frazier was regarded by his contemporaries as the first of the " SUPER BIG GUARDS" - an extraordinary player who had the skills and agility to play any position on the basketball court. One of his professional counterparts reflected - "before there was Magic & Dunbar - there was Wilbert".
We will all miss the Webster Legend.
