MARY ASHFORD (REVISED OBIT) Submitted by Ruston Leader on Fri, 09/09/2016 - 1:06pm Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Eva Taylor Ashford will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Lewis Temple CME Church in Grambling, Louisiana. The wake will be held Friday, September 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Lewis Temple CME Church, 310 Main Street in Grambling, Louisiana.
She died early Friday, September 2 at home. She was born March 1, 1927 in Montgomery, Alabama to James Taylor and Dora Roberson.
Mrs. Ashford was a retired school teacher who worked for more than 36 years for the Lincoln Parish School Board. She has taught at St. Rest, Choudrant, Lincoln, and Cypress Springs elementary schools.
She received bachelors degrees from West Virginia State University and Grambling State University, and a master’s degree from Grambling State University.
Mrs. Ashford was a member of Lewis Temple CME Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Lincoln Parish Association of Educators, and Boston University Black Women’s Health Study among others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Olemuel Ashford, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Ann Ashford and granddaughter LaWanza Ashford.
She leaves to mourn: children – Conchita A. Ashford Verret (Darrel), Dallas, Texas; Olemuel Ashford, Jr., Grambling, Louisiana; Sandra Denise Ashford Dupree (Gary), Grambling, Louisiana; grandchildren – Olemuel Ashford, III, Bloomington, Illinois; and Gariarta D. Dupree, Garielle Dupree and Gariandra Dupree, all of Grambling.
