Quarterback play to be big factor when Alabama State and Grambling State meet The quarterback matchup between Alabama State's Greg Jenkins and Grambling State's D.J. Williams made for good chatter during today's SWAC football coaches teleconference. The Hornets (1-1, 1-0), led by Jenkins, a senior in his second season as a starter, will travel to face the Tigers (0-2), who are guided by Williams, just a sophomore, Saturday at 6 p.m. The contest will be the SWAC TV Game of the Week and broadcasted live on the conference's Web site. Jenkins, who threw for close to 1,500 yards and 11 scores last season when the Hornets went 8-3, picked things up in Alabama State's 29-7 win against Mississippi Valley State this past Saturday. He completed 13 of 21 passes for 130 yards and carried the ball 13 times for 91 yards and a pair of scores, both in the first half, to catapult his team to a victory. www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/09/quarterback_to_be_a_big_factor.html

Runner pushing Roberts for GSU carries GRAMBLING — Doug Williams emphatically brushed off any question of a potential controversy at quarterback, but running back was a different story. Grambling played two quarterbacks and four halfbacks Saturday against TCU, and which rusher has proved the Tigers' best thus far may be among the most surprising lessons through two weeks this season. "Right now I can honestly say Dawrence (Roberts) is not running the ball as hard as we would like for him to," Williams said. "The guy that's been showing the enthusiasm running the football has been Jeremy Runner, and that's something that as a coaching staff we certainly will have to visit. "I think if you're talking about an area who might (see) diminished playing time, I think it's the running back area because now I feel like (Cedric) Skinner has thrown himself in the mix. I think Runner definitely is in the mix, and Dawrence has to do a better job of doing what he's supposed to do and doing what he did last year." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120911/SPORTS/209110321/Runner-pushing-Roberts-GSU-carries

Hornets Turn Back The Clock, Prep For Grambling The calendar says it's the third week of the college football season but it felt anything but at Tuesday night's Alabama State football practice. The session felt and sounded more like a training camp practice than the first day of the Hornets' (1-1 overall, 1-0 SWAC) preparation for Saturday's matchup with defending SWAC Champ Grambling State (0-2, 0-1) at 6 p.m. at GSU's Robinson Stadium (WVAS 90.7 FM/SWAC TV). In arguably the most physical practice of the year, Alabama State got down and dirty – literally. “We've decided to have our Tuesday night practice 9-on-7 running drill and special category periods be 'take-a-guy-down football' and just play football,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “On Wednesdays, we'll pull back and just have the 9-on-7 physical tackling period. We're going to do that for the next several weeks and then pull back. Right now, we want it physical. We want them to understand the mindset, because that's what type of game it's going to be.” ..... An admirer of history and tradition of the game, Barlow is excited to face one of the great programs and storied tradition that is Grambling State football, with its numerous black college national championships and a program that has sent more than 200 players to the National Football League. “I remember being in junior high school and my coach asking me if I wanted to come watch Grambling, who was playing on BET,” Barlow said recalling the memory from the mid-1980s. “That was my first interaction with Grambling. Ever since then, I've known about them and their tradition. It's going to be great to go there and compete this weekend.” One of Grambling's favorite sons, Doug Williams, is in his second stint as head coach and led the Tigers to the 2011 SWAC Championship. GSU features one of the SWAC's top returning running backs in Dawrence Roberts and Barlow knows the Tigers want to be physical on offense. “We know Doug from his time with the Washington Redskins and their physical style of play wants to play that same style at Grambling,” Barlow said. “We have our work cut out for us. They want to protect the quarterback. They want to be physical running the football, and then they will take their shots in play action.” www.bamastatesports.com/news/2012/9/11/FB_0911121308.aspx

Crowell only half GSU's battle Isaiah Crowell quickly drew as much attention this offseason from fans and media as any SWAC player, but coach Doug Williams said his Grambling defense can't devote too much of its own focus to the former SEC Freshman of the Year. Senior quarterback Greg Jenkins leads the Alabama State running attack into this week with team highs of 28 carries, 111 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and Williams cautioned the Tigers must be mindful of both Hornets' options. "I really haven't looked at (Crowell's) stats, but I do know from his highlights I've seen of him at Georgia, he ran well in the SEC," Williams said. "I think we do have a tough task in making sure we can stop him, but the quarterback is a guy that also likes to pull it down and run, so they've got some weapons." Barlow has fielded several FBS transfers in the past, including Jenkins, who began his college career at Troy But the coach said he's never dealt with an instance that received quite as much buzz — albeit not exactly unexpected or unwarranted. "Not as much as Isaiah," Barlow said, "Because he was SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Player of the Week several times, so we haven't had a guy with that level of fanfare ... We've had guys from FBS schools pretty much every other year I've been here, but nowhere near the type of publicity as Isaiah." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120914/SPORTS/209140329?nclick_check=1
