GSU football returns after short, hot summer This summer may have been — and continues to be — hot, but it wasn't particularly long for the Grambling football team. The Tigers report for training camp today, and will meet with their coaches and hit the field Thursday evening for their first full team practice of the fall. "It's here, and the kids this year should be a little more excited because of how we ended last year," coach Doug Williams said. "Hopefully some of the younger guys who played and some of the younger guys who were waiting their turn will be ready for their opportunity and show some enthusiasm." Fresh off 2011 Bayou Classic and SWAC championships, Grambling will be the first of northeast Louisiana's three NCAA Division-I teams to kick off this phase of their preparation for the 2012 season. www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120....er?odyssey=nav

Grambling starts fall practice GRAMBLING — "First" couldn't come soon enough for the Grambling football team. The defending SWAC champions were eager to return to the field Thursday for their first fall practice, marking the earliest start by any local Division-I college and one that couldn't come quickly enough. Several Tigers were outside by 5 p.m., more than two hours before a practice that didn't end until dark. "It's pretty exciting, man," senior punter Fabian Carter said. "The team has got a lot of young, humble guys, and it's good as a senior and a leader, kinda workin' with 'em. We haven't even seen that first ring yet, but we're workin' on getting another one already. We're very excited." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120....s-fall-practice

This is report is by GoGrambling.com special correspondent GCB44First day, Players are looking good and as commented by those in attendance look like football players, Coach Butler has done a good job, at the end of practice lineman had to run the 100 yards in under 16 seconds, linebackers and some other special team players in under 14 seconds and all others including qb's under 12 seconds, remember I said at the end of the practice not before, this is outstanding. if you read today's baton rouge advocate, you will see Southern had conditioning drills only and most of all their skill people were required to do 100's in under 16 seconds. who stood out, Roberts, Runner, and #1, I was told was Anthony M., #1 never dropped a pass, in fact few passes were dropped. #14 looks bigger and the tight ends are big. Offensive line, a lot of them. DJ and Frank are about the same to me except frank seems to have more zip on his passes. At the end, I think DJ got a little tired, which is expected the first day, and some of his passes hit the ground and was weak on his foot work. Coach White is working those guys very hard on the end where I was watching. Coach Ragsdale doesn't look to be 60 years old and teaching and moving from drill to drill like that. Kendrick Nord looks like he can still play the game, he was working the qb's through a lot of drills that I had never seen used before at GSU. There is no doubt Coach Williams has told them that expectations are high and they are aware because they don't break the huddles with Championship anymore, they break the huddles with the new saying that carried them through the championship last year, LETS EAT. defensively--- A lot of new faces on this end and it will take a few ppractices to find out who is who but I did notice Bud Patterson and Hollis, they can flat out run, plenty of speed the entire practice. All of the defense was working sideline to sideline drills all practice and #96 and #98 are big guys over 300 lbs. on the defensive line. Special teams had worked out before I arrived-no report at this time. Practice was scheduled at 6:15 PM and I was told most of these players were out at 5:00 PM on the field on their own. Despite the hot weather, which I have to get adjusted to just watching, these guys worked through it, very pleased with what I saw on this first day. About 20 players were kept after practice for some extra running because they didn't complete the conditioning drills that morning. Faces in the crowd, Coach Patricia Bibbs, Eddie jr, coach porter, just a few more names, my friend from little rock, Cliff Bennett, My best friend from about 10 years old to now, Minister Roy Mayberry My brother Patrick Mcdonald and my right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot, none of this would be possible without him Mr. Ray Higgins. more later this week out gcb44. Runner's Road "When you watch him run and you've seen him play, any coach who wouldn't want Jeremy Runner on the field, man, I don't think is a good coach," Williams said, pausing almost in disbelief such a hypothetical coach could exist. "Here's a guy that's versatile — whether he's returning kickoffs, whether he's in the slot or whether he's running the football. He's got great hands, got great open-field presence. Jeremy Runner is the type of guy that has the Reggie-Bush-like type of look without Reggie's total quickness." ... "I decided to come back here whenever I heard Doug Williams came back," he said. "It sounded like a good opportunity for me." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120805/SPORTS/208050306

Grambling embracing high expectations GRAMBLING — Grambing's not trying to duplicate its 2011 SWAC championship performance. The Tigers are trying to pick up where they left off. Big difference. No one in black and gold wants to relive the 1-4 start. Everyone wants to keep clicking the way they were during a redemptive seven-game win streak that reclaimed the crown. "What I try to convey to those guys is, 'Last year we started rough, but we ended well,'" coach Doug Williams said. "The most important thing is to continue where we ended. "If we can continue to play the kind of football we played down the stretch, this could be a pretty good year for us if we can understand where we are, and I think we've got the leaders to convey that to the younger guys and pull it out of 'em. And I think we've got guys that are gonna push each other because of what they accomplished last year." That attribute has been evident in players' chatter and encouragement throughout the first days of fall practices. www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120807/SPORTS/208070302/Grambling-embracing-high-expectations

Grambling sticking with fundamentals GRAMBLING — Fall has brought some fresh faces to Grambling's practice field, but many of its preparation sessions thus far look much as they did in the spring. Coach Doug Williams and company are focusing heavily on fundamentals for the first two and a half weeks of action, particularly with the Tigers hoping for contributions early and often from many of its newcomers. "At this point right now, it's fundamentals and making sure we get everybody up to snuff on where we left off in the spring and try to get the younger guys that might be contributing involved," he said. "Probably a week and a half out, then we'll start doing that game-planning thing to make sure everybody's on the same page." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120808/SPORTS/208080310/Grambling-sticking-fundamentals

Intensity, pace increase at Grambling practices Mother nature forced Grambling to cancel practice Wednesday night, but she hasn't stopped coach Doug Williams from getting a better look at his team already this week. The Tigers donned pads for the first time Monday, rested Tuesday and returned to practice Wednesday morning before having to call off their evening plans. More contact and an increasing schedule, which includes sessions Thursday night and Friday morning and night, has quickly raised the intensity level, Williams said. "There's no doubt when the pads come on you see so much more of who you actually have," the coach said. "When they're just in shorts and shells, they can kind of just ease through it ... I think we've been fortunate (Monday and Wednesday) to get a look at what we've got coming from some of the young guys, and now they've got to just keep going forward. www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120809/SPORTS/208090325

Tigers Show Growth in their First Scrimmage The Grambling State University Tiger football team had Saturday off after a light scrimmage on Friday night. GSU Head Football Coach Doug Williams said that the staff had the opportunity to look at the team on Friday in a live situation. "Originally we scheduled this scrimmage for Thursday, but the rain put us a little behind." said Coach Williams. "It's what I expected in our first scrimmage. I thought that we did some things well, but we still have a long way to go." Offensively the tigers had some impressive plays. Running Back Dawrence Roberts, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season, had some big runs for the first team, while freshman Cedric Skinner also made some impressive moves on the field. "I thought we had some good work offensively" said Coach Doug Williams. "I think we are growing and we saw some things that we did well and some things we need to improve on." On the defensive side of the ball the tigers were aggressive. Before the scrimmage they worked on funamentals and stressed how important it was going to be to communicate. During the scrimmage they made some great one on one playres in the secondary and were tested on the line. "I thought we were aggressive on defense during the scrimmage." said Coach Williams. "The front seven put some pressure on the quarterback and made some great plays. We just have to improve and make sure that we communicate." The tigers are scheduled to return to the practice field Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. at the GSU Tiger Football Practice Field. The GSU Tigers will open the season September 1st as they will take on SWAC foe Alcorn State University in the Port City Classic at Shreveport's Independence Stadium. Kick-off time for the game is at 6p.m. General Admission tickets are available for purchase at Super 1 and Brookshire grocery stores in Shreveport. Ticket vouchers may be purchased at the checkout counters and redeemed at the Will Call window on game day at Independence Stadium. General admission is $15 and $20 for reserved seating. Tickets are also on sale at all branches of Shreveport Federal Credit Union (Shreveport, Grambling and Bastrop) Independence Bowl offices, the State Fair of Louisiana in Shreveport or by going to www.ticketmaster.com. The ticket offices of Grambling and Alcorn State also have tickets available. RUNNING and no longer WOUNDED Roberts feeling fine with hamstring, pressure GRAMBLING — Dawrence Roberts runs everywhere — and fast. Just apparently not from challenges. After an injury-hampered spring, the junior tailback returned to the Grambling practice field this fall with his mind set on fulfilling the high expectations not just of his own, but of the entire Southwestern Athletic Conference. He's off to a blistering pace so far. "Dawrence is having the camp of his lifetime right now," coach Doug Williams said. And this week's increase in physical play hasn't fazed the Clearwater, Fla. native as pads and more contact entered the equation. "The last two days, let's just say he's had two pretty darn good days hittin' up in there," Williams. "He's showing so much confidence ... I think he understands he has a chance now to be good, and he's playing with a lot more confidence." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20120814/SPORTS/208140307
