Aaron C. Carpenter
Aaron C. Carpenter, a loyal and devoted husband, a strong community and university supporter of many, many years, departed this earth on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Mr. Carpenter was born in Port Gibson, MS and was educated in the public schools of Port Gibson. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Alcorn State University and his Master’s degree from Indiana University. After working at his alma mater for some years he joined the Grambling State University (then Grambling College) family in 1960 as Director of the Student Union (and also director of student activities), and Assistant Professor of Business.
As a member of the Lewis Temple CME Church, he served on the trustee and usher boards, to which he gave dedicated services. He was honored as Lewis Temple “Man of the Year” in 1980.
Aaron was very civic minded, with a sincere concern for the welfare of Grambling. He served for a number of years as Commissioner for Streets, and he was involved in some of the business ventures of the town/city.
In 2004, Aaron, along with family and friends established the Corinne T. Carpenter Endowed Memorial Scholarship, in honor of his late wife. The scholarship was endowed with matching funds from Grambling.
Aaron is predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Dr. Corrine Taylor Carpenter, and his step-daughter, Ivel Adair Craddock.
Aaron leaves a loving and caring niece, Dr. Nedra Clem (Dr. Edward R.) Jackson – Houston, TX, and a nephew, Mr. William W. (Elaine) Clem – Baton Rouge, LA, and several grand nieces and nephews. He also leaves a son, Mr. William E. (Betty) Carpenter – Jackson, MS, and a daughter, Mrs. Aryian (Lt. Col. Ret. Samuel) Boswell – Montgomery, AL, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Aaron was a good man who served his nation, his community, his university, his students, his family and his friends with tireless love. When all is written and all is done, there is nothing more important than to have served and served well.
