Grambling (7-4, 6-3 SWAC) enters the championship on a six-game winning streak that gave the Tigers a one-game advantage over Prairie View and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Western Division race. GSU defeated its arch rival Southern in the Bayou Classic, 36-12 to clinch its seventh all-time berth into the championship game. Grambling's last appearance was in 2008, when the Tigers defeated Jackson State to claim the school's fifth victory all-time in the SWAC championship game. GSU is 5-1 all-time in the contest.
Alabama A&M (8-3, 7-2 SWAC) is the champion of the Eastern Division for the fifth time in school history. The Bulldogs earned the division berth via a three-way tie-breaker with Alabama State and Jackson State. A&M rattled off seven straight wins during the season and ended up with the tie-breaker advantage after a 20-19 win over Alabama State in the Magic City Classic. The Bulldogs also won at Grambling for the first time in school history, 20-14, in the fourth week of the season. Alabama A&M last appeared in the title game in 2009, losing to Prairie View A&M. Prior to those two appearances, A&M has played Grambling three other times (2000, 2002, and 2005) with the Tigers winning all three championship game matchups.
