I have a great question. Do you guys feel that the Alumni chapters are truely benefiting the Growth of Grambling in their respected areas they serve? With enrollment under 5k at Grambling. Are we as Alumni truely trying to recruit for Grambling?

I can only speak for my chapter and one of the problems I see is getting kids to go to school period! Although it would help if we had more organized College day activities.

So Hilangelaw and Gwamwest, What do you guys think would work. As a local president, I see that most alumni have lost sight that we are the pulse of the University. More caught up on what "they" did back in the day, instead of how we can grow for the future.

I'm trying to figure out what can be done about getting kids interested in going to college. The 2 issues I see the most are fear of failure and finances. If I find a student interested in attending GSU, it would help if the college day was more organized and helpful. Another thing is that our alums need to be more familiar with the enrollment process.

More caught up on what "they" did back in the day, instead of how we can grow for the future. Kcgreen I see our biggest problems because of our selfish alumni......They don't give because they use the excuse that everyone steal.....I disagree with that assesment......Most of our alumni are honest and hard working individuals......We have alumni that will spend $100.00 a night at a bar,but won't pay alumni dues......Our university is only going to be as strong as our alumni associations.......That is the reason that all of the chapters need to raise more money......We need to reach out beyond GSU alumni to recruit associate members from other schools that will pay their dues and donate money to our cause. The younger generation need to mix more with the older generation.....Most of the younger ones do not have the same loyalty as the older ones and they think they know everything,so it makes it hard to teach them. I had to sell my 3.8 gpa home girl on attending Grambling after she was considering LSU and ULL......I told her what I tell all, there is no way that they will care about you the way that we would.....An A is an A.....I told her at Grambling that she would make friends that would last for a lifetime and would be just as enthused as I am when it become her turn to send a student back to Grambling. As you can see,the difference between me and some other Gramblinites is that I truly believe in Grambling......A lot of other Gramblinites that I run into don't believe in Grambling enough to send their kids unless they can't get in anywhere else or don't even believe in it enough to convince their friends kids to attend Grambling.

Outside of Monroe Alumni, What other chapters have had fundraisers to benefit the University in any way. (scholarships, athletic facilities, etc.) I live in So Cal but I am financial through Monroe. I recruit hard for Grambling. In the past four years, I have been influential in 6 students attending GSU. One of them Graduated this Spring.

I am currently President of the New Charted GUNAA - North Dallas Chapter, I hear everything you guys are saying. I will say this. We are trying to do our part, but we have come up against some Grambling Alumni Road blocks that have made me wonder about some of the people in Positions of the Alumni organizations as a whole. I am starting to wonder, Are people in these position for the sake of "personal" conversation or for the betterment of Grambling State University? ?

You have figured it out,but you can't stop......Keep going despite the resistance......Everyone need to remove their egos for the good of Grambling......Just remember this, you can't please them all regardless of what you do,so always do what you think is in the best interest of Grambling......Continue to lead!

It would be nice if every chapter could raise funds to bring students in their areas to a Grambling game. Have some kind of perk to the trip like students with 3.0 or better, 2.8 or better or something that's related to academics so that we can make sure we're attracting academically inclined students also, another big plus for the university.
Also, each chapter could throw a Grambling round-up, ask the Admissions, Housing & Registrars Office to send information about Grambling to pass out to students in the alumni area or ask the recruitment department can someone come to the round up to talk to students and parents, through a picnic or bar b que, give them the information, answer the prospects questions etc. Something as simple as that can attract students, especially if the information is correctly give, give some history and make the students feel wanted.\
And last, Alumni Chapters could set up Grambling Presentations at high schools in their area, present them with information on Grambling, work with the recruiting office to see if they can come and talk to the students or send the alumni chapter the information to present to the students. Talk about the new housing, band scholarships, athletic scholarships, academic scholarships, the history etc. I guarantee that type of information will lure someone to Grambling. Not many talk up Grambling like they should and once we start back doing it, we will grow and at a quick rate.

As a newly chartered chapter, San Antonio is working hard on our recruiting program. To tell you the truth, a great deal of recruiting is done individually when our members wear their shirts in the local area! We have not only spurred an interest among students but parents and unknown "alums" as well. Last year, our effort was to become associated with high school counselors, receive recruiting training, and attend local college fairs. We plan to "step up" our efforts this year now that we are better known in the area. We also hope to hold another scholarship banquet, and we are partnering with TSU and St Philips College. We had hoped to bring a group to high school day but it is back-to-back weekends with homecoming. San Antonio is an 8 hr drive away and may be tough to do a "turn around" trip. So we're trying to figure out lodging accomodations for the kids which brings on a totally different responsibility/obstacle. In this financially constrained environment, students and their parents need scholarships...and we are working hard to provide book scholarships to them. No matter what, the San Antonio chapter is proud to continue our recruiting efforts, inform our locals about GSU, and send quality students to our Alma Mater!
