Grambling State University Receives Approval to Name the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center
Grambling, LA -- On February 26, 2010, the UL System Board of Supervisors approved the naming of the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center at Grambling State University. Interim President Frank G. Pogue declared, “We are delighted to have received the support of the board in recognizing the winningest college basketball coach in the state.” He went on to say that, “You could sense the excitement rising in people when you mentioned the name Hobdy; the board was even excited.”
Coach Hobdy is Louisiana’s all-time winningest college basketball coach with a career record at Grambling State University of 567 wins and 287 losses. Between 1956 and 1986, as Grambling State University’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Hobdy won 10 conference championships (eight in the Southwest Conference, two in the Midwest), led the Tigers to 14 national tournaments, and won the National Association of Inter-collegiate Athletics (NAIA) Championship title in 1961. He was named The Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year six times and NAIA Coach of the year once. Coach Hobdy was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, Grambling State University’s Hall of Fame, Louisiana Basketball Association Hall of Fame, and the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.
Coach Hobdy was responsible for building successful young men both on and off the field. Sixteen of his players went on to the professional basketball ranks as NBA stars, coaches at all levels, as well as teachers and administrators serving and impacting lives, exponentially.
As Dr. Pogue stated, “This is another example of Grambling State University’s commitment to honoring legacies and legends.”
