Grambling State Coach Doug Williams returning to the Bayou Classic In his second stint as Grambling State’s coach, Doug Williams will be involved Saturday in his first Bayou Classic game since 2003, when the Tigers play Southern at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Similar to when he took over the Tigers’ program after legendary coach Eddie Robinson in 1998, Williams considers no game bigger. He was Grambling’s quarterback in the first Bayou Classic game 37 years ago at Tulane Stadium, and led the Tigers to a 21-0 victory against Southern. Now he’s back on the sideline calling the shots with his son, D.J. Williams, starting as a freshman quarterback. www.nola.com/bayouclassic/index.ssf/2011/11/grambling_state_coach_williams.html

Younger Williams looking to make name for himself in Classic As the son of a former Super Bowl MVP quarterback, Grambling State’s D.J. Williams has had to live up to high expectations since grade school. Williams will be patrolling the sidelines for the Grambling State Tigers for the Bayou Classic on Saturday. "I'm going to be daddy at home, but when it comes to football, I'm (D.J.'s) coach," Williams said when ask if he treats his son differently on or off the field. Those expectations have risen even more now that he is a freshman quarterback at Grambling State, where Doug Williams, his father, is the head coach and a former Grambling star. D.J. Williams is driven to make a name for himself, and an ideal opportunity to do that comes this Saturday against rival Southern in the annual State Farm Bayou Classic at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Williams starred in the first Bayou Classic in 1974 as Grambling’s quarterback, and he never lost to the Jaguars as a player. Now, D.J. gets his chance for the first time to do the same. “I’ve been living with expectations my whole life,’’ D.J. said. “I’ve been Doug Williams’ son since I was born. Even when I played basketball, and my dad wasn’t even a basketball player, I heard people say, ‘you are Doug Williams’ son.’ “I think I have handled it very well. I don’t pay attention to the outsiders or critics. I just do my part to help my team win. I understand that things are expected of me because of who my dad is. But I don’t let that get to me. I just try to be the best that D.J. can be. www.nola.com/bayouclassic/index.s....king_to_ma.html

Bayou Classic stirs memories GRAMBLING — Grambling football coach Doug Williams thinks often of his former mentor, the legendary Eddie Robinson. During Bayou Classic week, he does even more. "When you think about the Bayou Classic, you should think about coach Rob and (renowned GSU sports information director) Collie J. (Nicholson)," said Williams, who will lead Grambling against Southern in the 38th edition of the Classic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. "You've got to think about coach Rob and Collie J. any time you talk about the Bayou Classic. I don't know if we do them as much justice as both those guys deserve because without those guys there would be no Bayou Classic." www.thenewsstar.com/article/20111124/SPORTS/111240308

‘Rob,’ Nicholson were pioneers for ‘Classic’ Submitted by Ruston Leader on Wed, 11/23/2011 - 12:59pm in Sports O.K. Davis GRAMBLING — Figure on Eddie Robinson and Collie J. Nicholson looking down from above on Saturday when another “Bayou Classic” is held at the Louisiana Superdome. “There wouldn’t be a ‘Bayou Classic’ without ‘Coach Rob’ and Collie J.,” summed up Grambling State University head coach Doug Williams. “Anytime somebody asks me about the ‘Classic’ and all and what it means, those are the two men I think of because of what they did to get it started and become the huge event it is today.” rustonleader.com/node/19002

Southern and Grambling preparing for Bayou Classic battle Needing a win against Southern in this Saturday’s Bayou Classic to clinch a berth to next month’s Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game, Grambling Coach Doug Williams said his team will be ready. Williams and Southern Coach Stump Mitchell were in New Orleans today for the annual coaches news conference at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome that kicks off the week of events related to the big rivalry game. Grambling (6-4, 5-3) is on a five-game winning streak since starting the season at 1-4. Southern (4-6, 4-4) can clinch a four-way tie for a share of the SWAC Western Division with a victory. Grambling has won the previous three games against Southern. ``When you are dealing with a young group like we are dealing with and to be where we are today in position to possibly go to the championship I think it speaks volumes to the character of the football team, so I feel pretty good,’’ Williams said. www.nola.com/bayouclassic/index.ssf/2011/11/southern_and_grambling_prepari.html
